UX Writing workshops for Product teams, with the understanding that ‘We learn through teaching others’.

As the only UX Writer at Ultimate Software (later UKG), I was embedded directly into high-visibility product design teams. Soon after, a need developed for other design teams requiring dedicated UX writing support, however additional headcount was not available to support the need. A solution was required to fill this gap.

The solution? Partnering with Product Brand, we created on-site workshops to teach UX Designers and Product Managers how to write UX copy in their user experience prototyping work. The workshops were well-attended and well received.

As part of the workshop, a players card deck was designed for each attendee to not only use in the workshop, but also as a takeaway to use afterwards in their respective design work. The cards were designed with the understanding that writing is not a skillset that comes naturally to everyone, particularly for those for whom English is not their first language. This was a concerned raised up in the initial exploration phase.

The card decks are two-sided and color coded, each segment covering Writing Principles, Writing Tips, Voice and Tone guidance, and Writing to the Ultimate Brand Persona (The Guide). On one side appears a specific tip or principle, and on the flip side, a UI example.

Following the workshops, attendees could attend my weekly office hours on a consulting basis. In addition, I created a UX Writer’s channel in Slack for design teams to crowdsource their knowledge and cross collaborate on UX content support, providing the opportunity for teams to share their UI copy and active prototypes to get immediate feedback from others in the community.
